Ombré Cakes with Ganache

How to Create a Smooth Ombré Cake Using Frost Form

Ombré cakes are a beautiful way to add depth and dimension to your designs, and using Frost Form makes the process clean, controlled, and surprisingly simple. This method works best with mock ganache or butter ganache, giving you sharp edges and a flawless blend every time.

What You’ll Need

  • Frost Form with your cake already stacked and centered

  • Mock ganache or butter ganache

  • 2–3 bowls for coloring

  • Oil-based food coloring (such as Colour Mill)

  • A long skewer

  • Fridge or freezer

Step 1: Prepare Your Ganache

Make your mock ganache or butter ganache as usual. Divide the ganache evenly into two or three bowls, depending on how many ombré shades you want.

Color each bowl using an oil-based food coloring. Oil-based colors are essential here, as they blend seamlessly into ganache without causing the ganache to seize.

Step 2: Assemble the Frost Form

Place your cake inside the Frost Form. Make sure the cake is centered and chilled before adding your ganache.

Side note: Stacking your cake within the crumb cutter & liner ensures your cake is perfectly straight!

Step 3: Pour the Ombré Layers

Pour each color of ganache into the Frost Form one after the other, starting with either your darkest or lightest shade—there’s no wrong order, just different effects.

Work efficiently so the ganache stays fluid.

Step 4: Blend the Colors

Immediately take a long skewer and slide it down the inside edge of the Frost Form. Press the skewer gently against the liner (being careful not to touch the cake itself).

Using a circular motion, move the skewer around the Frost Form to encourage the colors to blend. Repeat this process as many times as you like until the ombré looks smooth and natural.

This step is where the magic happens!✨

Step 5: Set and Reveal

Once you’re happy with the blend, place the cake in the fridge or freezer until the ganache is fully set. Remove the Frost Form base, peel away the liner, and reveal a perfectly smooth ombré finish.

Voila! A clean, professional ombré cake with minimal effort and ZERO scraping!

This technique is perfect for birthdays, weddings, or any cake that deserves a soft, elegant color transition. Experiment with different color palettes and blending styles to make it your own. Happy decorating! 🎂
