One of the questions we’re asked all the time is: “Can I use cream cheese frosting inside a Frost Form cake?”
And the answer is yes — absolutely!
But with one important guideline: keep it inside the cake, not on the outside.
Why Only Use It for the Inner Layers?
Cream cheese frosting is naturally much softer than traditional buttercream. That softness is delicious, but it also means it’s not the most stable option for the exterior of a stacked cake.
For the outer frosting, where stability and a perfect Frost Form peel matter the most, we recommend using:
-
Standard Buttercream
-
Ganache
These hold their shape beautifully and ensure you get that clean, crisp Frost Form finish.
Don’t Forget the Buttercream Dam
Because cream cheese frosting is softer, we always suggest creating a dam using regular buttercream.
This is simply a ring of firmer buttercream piped around the edge of each layer. It acts as a barrier to keep the cream cheese filling neatly contained — very similar to how you’d handle curds or other loose fillings.
A dam is quick to make, but makes a huge difference in stability.
